Safe Water Temperatures & Scalding Risks
There is a big difference between a "safe" water temperature and temperature monitoring for Legionella compliance.
The water temperatures required for Legionella compliance are the same as those required under the Building Regulations and the Water Regulations. How a “safe” water temperature is achieved is a balancing act between regulations, the type of site, the type of system, outlet type and who uses the system. And the answer is not to just fit Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMV). Fitting a TMV valve can reduce a scalding risk whilst increasing the risk of bacterial growth.
Before fitting a TMV valve to anything other than a bath or a shower a comparative assessment between the risk of scalding against the risk of infection (with the emphasis on preventing infection) should be carried out before fitting a TMV valve.
